Kona Brewing Company was founded by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa. The pair had a vision to reflect the spirit, culture, and beauty of Hawaii in a collection of local island craft beers, so in 1994 they set out for the Big Island to bring their dream to life.

The Japan Brewery Company, the forerunner to KIRIN, was established in 1885, and by 1888 they began brewing KIRIN. The market welcomed KIRIN, recognizing the beer’s authentic German brewmasters who used German ingredients. In 1907, the Japan Brewery Company changed its name to KIRIN Brewery, continuing its high standards in securing the best malt and hops and investing in facilities.

This emphasis on quality led to KIRIN ranking in the top tier of Japanese beers, attaining a 60% domestic market share by 1972. The launch of KIRIN ICHIBAN in 1990, with its unique first press wart process, generated record sales and soon became one of the company’s most successful products. The iconic rhum of Martinique, Rhum Clément was founded in 1887 by Homere Clément. Rhum Clement is known around the globe for its world-class rum and innovative approach to delivering the time-honored traditions of the heirs of Homère Clement. On the central Atlantic coast in Le Francois, Clément crafts a variety of AOC certified white and aged Rhum Agricole as well as a range of liqueurs, the most popular being the classic French Caribbean delicacy Créole Shrubb. Habitation Clément is famous for its various charred oak profiles for their casks, which are housed in five cellars patiently aging over a million liters of rum lending the rum flavorful tannins and character known so well in the Clément aged rhum profile.

In the late 17th century, the famous Père Labat, a Jesuit credited with proliferating sugar cultivation in the French West Indies, was the parish priest of Macouba while he operated a sugar refinery at his house along the Roche River. Antoine Leroux-Préville purchased Father Labat’s estate in 1790 and gave the plantation the name we know it by today, Fonds-Préville. In 1845, Antoine Leroux-Préville’s daughters sold the property to Jean-Marie Martin, a merchant from Saint-Pierre and husband of Marie Ferment who was the daughter of one of the island’s great planters. Jean-Marie Martin recognized the superior quality of the sugarcane he found on the Fonds-Préville estate and decided to properly cultivate sugarcane solely for the production Rhum Agricole. He built a small distillery on the estate and branded his initials “J.M.” on the first oak barrels used to mature and transport his rhum to market. Since then, these two letters have become and remain the emblem of the most prestigious and most superior rum known in Martinique.

In 1914, Gustave Crassous de Médeuil, already owner of the Maison Bellevue, purchased Habitation Fonds-Préville. From this day, Maison Bellevue and Fonds-Préville became one entity. Located at the foot of the volcano Mont Pelée, Distillerie Fonds-Préville continues to be the highest-regarded rhumerie in Martinique. Today, the heirs of the Crassous de Médeuil family continue to craft the most superior rhum in the world by abiding to the tradition and the promise to always produce artisanal Rhum Agricole, from sugarcane of the adjacent Bellevue and Fonds-Préville plantations.

Chairman’s Reserve was created by Laurie Barnard, the last founding family member to hold the Chairman’s position at St. Lucia Distillers. He created a splendid rum, steeped in the 80 plus years of St. Lucian rum heritage and the legacy of the Barnard family. To create Chairman’s, he experimented with blending respective casks of double distilled pot still rum and column still rum. By returning the blended rum back into oak barrels for additional aging, Laurie Barnard created a soft, well-balanced, and flavorful spirit that has become the benchmark for St. Lucian rum.
